AIM Fellows
The AIM Research Community
In order to support and encourage cutting edge innovation in management research, AIM has taken an unusual step with its Fellowship Scheme of backing people rather than projects. All individuals appointed to AIM Fellowships are recognised leaders in their own fields. We support them to generate knowledge suitable for academic audiences in scholarly settings while engaging with practitioners and policy makers throughout their research.
For further information on the AIM Fellowships and the researchers working with them, visit the groups listed below:
AIM supports academics at all levels to develop and disseminate world class management research. Our Associates are at various stages of their careers, and although not funded by the ESRC, they work closely with the AIM Community. Each AIM Associate is nominated by an existing AIM Senior Fellow. The term of their appointment is for one year, and during this period they work actively and closely with their nominating AIM Senior Fellow.
AIM Senior Fellows spend three years with AIM and during that time are expected to improve understanding of factors affecting national competitiveness and, in particular, to further understanding of how management can make a difference to organisational performance.
AIM Executive Advisors are recognised as world-class practitioners, leading the way in translating breakthrough academic knowledge into real results within their corporations. AIM Executive Advisors collaborate with the Academic Fellows in the development and refinement of new ideas for business success.
The Ghoshal Fellowship scheme was formed in honour of the late Professor Sumantra Ghoshal, a well respected AIM Fellow who sadly passed away in March 2004.
The Ghoshal Fellows are all mid-career academics selected from more than 50 applicants, to work with AIM for a three-year period. Their research interests range from the individual manager (Robyn Thomas), management practices within firms (Julia Balogan and Paula Jarzabkowski), practices and processes for search and innovation at the firm level (Ammon Salter) to long-running change in key industry sectors (Gerben Bakker), innovation in services (Bruce Tether) and international comparative studies (Simon Collinson, Nick Bloom and Michael Jacobides).
A core theme connecting the group is the bridging of various levels of analysis, so that management practices, performance outcomes, firm-level competitive advantage and international differences are all linked.
AIM Innovation Fellows are scholars focusing specifically on innovation. Innovation both in terms of exploration and exploitation - is key to the UK's future. In an age dominated by open innovation, understanding processes of innovation and their diffusion through firms is essential. In addition to the AIM Innovation Fellows, AIM also hosts a £2 million targeted initiative on innovation.
AIM Visiting International Fellows
AIM Fellows have linked their research programmes with leading international academics through International Visiting Fellowships. Many Scholars from overseas have visited the UK for short periods to work collaboratively with AIM Fellows and disseminate their findings.
In order to improve public services in the UK, the next generation of management research and theory must be of the very highest standard. AIM Public Service Fellows make a concrete contribution to this agenda by developing and executing creative, rigorous and engaged projects which hold the potential to significantly improve public service delivery.
A specific objective was to prepare the way for significant ESRC investment in public services management research through the new 'Excellence in Public Service Delivery' programme announced in March 2003, and commenced in the spring of 2004.
AIM Targeted Initiative on Innovation
The Targeted Initiative will focus on four related questions exploring key aspects of innovation both in the UK and within an international comparative context. The main objective of the initiative is to promote and support world class theoretical, empirical, policy- and practice-oriented research in innovation.
The AIM Scholars Scheme offers an opportunity for the next generation of management research talent to participate in AIM related activities and events.
Nominated by their Deans as potential stars of the future, AIM Scholars are seconded to complete short-term projects under the guidance of AIM's Deputy Director, Professor Andy Neely.
Innovation & Productivity Grand Challenge
The Innovation and Productivity Grand Challenge (IPGC) is a major £3.5m programme funded by the EPSRC and involving five major universities – Cambridge, Cranfield, Imperial College, Liverpool and Loughborough – and the Advanced Institute of Management Research.
The Challenge seeks to clarify the path from knowledge to innovation, so that top level thinking on innovation can be translated into organisational level practice, having a real impact on productivity. Fellows involved with the Challenge work closely with policy agents to make sure that the knowledge to innovation system works at regional and national level across all the sectors.

The Ideas Factory is about bringing a diverse group of academics together to debate and explore issues and ideally generate new and potential insightful research avenues. From the initial Ideas Factory event in January 2005, 20 selected participants spent four days discussing potential themes and ideas to take the programme forward. These participants are now working on inter-related projects to develop productivity and performance.
The AIM Services Fellows will be exploring topics such as innovation in services – the creation and pricing of new service business models, entrepreneurial behaviour in services and gender and diversity in the sector. The Fellows in Services will complement the existing AIM Fellows both in terms of their individual disciplines and increasing research coverage of relevant issues in the area of services.
AIM Management Practice Fellows
AIM Management Practice fellows are scholars focusing their research on the development, adoption and dissemination of management practices that result in greater effectiveness and efficiency.
