Mark Beatson

Mark BeatsonMark Beatson is a Director in the economics practice of FTI Consulting. Until autumn 2010, he was a Director of Analysis within the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and previously he was Chief Economist at the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS).  Before taking these broader roles, he led the team within the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) providing economic and statistics advice on science and innovation policies. He led the team that produced the economic analysis underpinning the DTI's major review of innovation policy (published in December 2003 as 'Competing in the Global Economy: The Innovation Challenge') and also formed part of the team that drafted the report. He chaired the project board for the UK Innovation Survey.  Mark was the UK delegate to the OECD's Committee on Science and Technology Policy and a member of the OECD's Expert Advisory Group for its innovation strategy.  Mark is an economist by training. Before working on innovation, he led analytical and policy advice on employment legislation within the DTI. He has previously worked for the UK Department of Employment, the European Commission, the UK Treasury, and the Health and Safety Executive.
