EVENT

A week of events bringing together leading academics, industrialists, policy makers to address the evolving challenges facing service education, research, practice and policy.

21 - 26 September 2010

The service sector now accounts for 75 percent of the labour force in the US and the UK and more than 50 percent in Brazil, Russia, Japan and Germany. The dramatic growth of the service sector is changing the nature of organisations. However, it is becoming apparent that there is a lack of research and knowledge in the area of service to help address the challenges these changes are bringing about.

CALL

Call for submissions to a Gender, Work and Organization Special Issue on

Gender, diversity and inclusion in professions and professional organizations

30th September 2010

The professions have historically suffered from poor records on gender, diversity and inclusion, with many professional associations formally excluding women well into the 20th century. Of course, over the last 30 years, in the context of broader economic, social and legislative changes cross nationally, we have witnessed undoubted progress.

For further information please check the call flyer.

EVENT

The Role of Universities and Other Key Stakeholders in Knowledge Transfer by Thursday 30th September 2010

Although significant work exists in incremental innovation, research on radical innovation is not as substantial and there appears to be little synthesis of the research that does exist. Much research is focused on high-tech companies, however, the arts and other creative industries also have much to offer. There are also many links with the basic physical and biological sciences, and with disciplines such as economics, geography, psychology, sociology, and business/management that study the factors that inhibit/facilitate innovation.

CALL

Call for papers Special Issue on Operations Management in the Public Sector

The pressure to improve the productivity and performance of public services has led to many calls from industrialists, management consultants and policy officers for the application of operations management practices to the public sector.

Papers should use empirical data to develop theoretical and conceptual ideas which, for example, help to explore the degree to which the concepts developed in operations management are really context-free.  Papers should challenge, empirical or theoretical, operations management, drawing if appropriate on other disciplines, to present new frameworks and models of operations management for public service. For further information please visit the Call Flyer.

Guest Editors: Daniel Muzio (University of Leeds), David Brock (Ben-Gurion University) and Roy Suddaby (University of Alberta)

There is a growing awareness of the critical role that professions play in advanced economies. Professionals and professional service firms are key advisors, analysts, defenders and developers of the major institutions that underpin capitalist economies. As gatekeepers to key financial institutions, the professions influence both the success and failure of capital markets.
