Abstract:

The aim of this thought-provoking panel is to discuss how the scholarly field of Science and Technology Studies (STS) can provide new standpoints to advance our understanding of routines and capabilities dynamics. Specifically, we show how recent advances in STS and Performativity Theory can provide new tools to capture the situated micro-level dynamics underpinning routines evolution and adaptation.

These include new ways to characterise the key role of material artefacts and distributed agencies in influencing routines and capabilities’ emergence and persistence, and, ultimately, organizational change and stability. To address these important but as yet underexplored issues our panel includes some of those scholars that have made key contributions towards developing STS theories in relation to their application to studies of organization, routines and practices.
