Funding for travel and accommodation was available for early career researchers to engage in this capacity building event hosted at the University of Reading, organized around Prof Deborah Dougherty's visit to the UK.

Seminar on Grounded theory, qualitative research and how to use theory effectively (11.00am-12.30pm)

Prof Deborah Dougherty, AIM Visiting International Fellow at Rutgers University

Deborah Dougherty is an eminent management scholar with an impressive publication record and pipeline in journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science and Strategic Management Journal. Deborah is a Senior Editor of Organization Science, and is on the Editorial Boards of Organization Studies and Strategic Organization, having served as an editor with several other journals.

Her research interests centre on innovation management, exploring themes such as organising for sustained product innovation in complex organisations, service innovation, radical and science-based innovation, particularly in the empirical setting of bio-pharmaceutical drug discovery.

This day focused on how theory is used in studying innovative practices in complex industries, such as construction, pharmaceuticals or oil and gas. There was an open call for papers from early career researchers to give posters in the poster session and attend the seminars.

Monday, 14 March 2011:

11.00am-12.30pm: PhD seminar: "Grounded theory, qualitative research and how to use theory effectively" (Prof Deborah Dougherty) - with online as well as in room participation

12.30-5.30pm: Lunch in the Design Innovation Research Centre (room 216 Engineering)

1.30-3.30pm: Poster presentations of research projects on management practices in innovation (PhD students and post-doctoral researchers)

3.30-5.00pm: Summary of the day. Presentation and discussion of Deborah's ongoing research and lessons for management research

Evening: Drinks reception and dinner with colleagues at the University of Reading
