Productivity and Performance
An enduring topic of public policy debate is concern over the apparent gap between the productivity and performance of UK organisations compared with those of a limited range of other developed countries. While research has succeeded in confirming the existence of the gap and has even provided quantifications of the gap for selected areas, analyses of its causes are still relatively restricted (cf. Porter/Ketels 2003)
Within AIM we are seeking to unpack the productivity problem. Initial research explored the sectors that contribute most to the productivity gap and observed that while the size of the gap has remained relatively constant in the last decade, the relative productivity performance of different sectors in the UK has changed markedly (Griffith et al 2003).
