Professor Harmen Oppewal 

Harmen Oppewal is Professor of Retail Marketing at Monash University. He previously held academic appointments at the Technical University of Eindhoven, University of Surrey and the University of Sydney. He received his PhD from the Technical University of Eindhoven and holds a BSc degree in Geography and a BSc and MSc in Psychology from the University of Groningen.

His research focuses on understanding and modelling consumer decision-making behaviour. He conducted numerous studies in marketing retail, housing, leisure, tourism and transportation for academic and consulting projects. He is currently involved in projects related to assortment perception, branding and store choice, multipurpose shopping behaviour, use of parks and other urban facilities, visualisation and information acceleration, information search and channel choice, and tourist destination choice.

He obtained funding from, among others, the Australian Research Council, The Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Tourism, and the European Commission. His research has been published in a range of journals including Journal of Marketing Research; Journal of Retailing; International Journal of Research in Marketing; Journal of Business Research; Journal of Economic Psychology; Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services; Marketing Letters; Environment and Behaviour; Environment and Planning A; Geographical Analysis; Leisure Sciences; Journal of Travel Research; Tourism Analysis; Transportation; Transportation Research A.

Professor Oppewal will work with AIM Fellow Professor Ian Clarke and Research Associate Malcolm Kirkup on an AIM Project titled 'Evaluating Food Retailing Competition at the Micro-level Using Consumer Choice Profiling'. This project aims to develop novel consumer based measures for assessing the adequacy of retail provision, to complement existing economic approaches to local competition. The project builds on previous ESRC funded work by Professor Clarke and will benefit from Professor Oppewal's expertise in shore choice modelling.
