Jean M. Bartunek
Jean M. Bartunek is the Robert A. and Evelyn J. Ferris Chair and Professor of Organization Studies at Boston College, where she has taught since 1977. She was previously a visiting assistant professor in the organizational behavior group at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her PhD is in social and organizational psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is a past president (2001 – 2002) and fellow (since 1999) of the Academy of Management.
Jean has published over 100 journal articles and book chapters in a number of prestigious outlets, as well as five books, Creating alternative realities at work: The Quality of Worklife experiment at Foodcom (co-authored with Michael Moch, Harper Business, 1990), Hidden conflict in organizations: Uncovering behind-the-scenes disputes (co-edited with Deborah Kolb, Sage, 1992), Insider-outsider team research (co-authored with Meryl Louis, Sage, 1996), Organizational and educational change: The life and role of a change agent group (Erlbaum, 2003), and Church ethics and its organizational context: Learnings from the sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church (co-edited with Mary Ann Hinsdale and James Keenan, Rowman & Littlefield, 2006). Her paper “On the receiving end: Sensemaking, emotion, and assessments of an organizational change initiated by others”, co-authored with Denise Rousseau, Jenny Rudolph, and Judith DePalma, won the Douglas McGregor award for best paper published in the Journal of Applied Behavior Science in 2006. Her primary substantive research interests are in the intersections of organizational change, conflict, and social cognition. Her primary methodological interest is in academic-practitioner collaborative research.
Jean is an associate editor of the Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, and serves on the editorial board of a number of journals, including the Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, the Journal of Organizational Behavior, and Human Relations. She has won a “best reviewer” award from the Academy of Management Journal three times. She was previously a co-editor for the non-traditional research section of the Journal of Management Inquiry (1994-1997) and an associate editor of Advances in Qualitative Organizational Research (1998 – 2004).
